When conducting fact finding with a client, it’s important to ask the right questions to gain a deep understanding of their needs, goals, and values.
Here are 10 of the best questions a coach can ask a client:
1. Have you ever worked with a life coach before?
This question helps gauge their experience with the coaching process and provides insight into their previous experiences.
2. What do you want to get from this process?
Understanding their expectations and desired outcomes can help tailor your coaching strategies to their specific needs.
3. What is most important to you in life (in general)?
This question helps identify their biggest concerns and worries, allowing you to address them in the fact finding process. An example of this could be, losing their health. Losing most of their money or even losing their freedom. Ask specifically what they mean by all of those things. What would it look like to them?
4. Are you currently accomplishing your goals? If so, which ones and how?
Assessing their progress towards their own goals that are already set helps you as the coach determine if adjustments need to be made in their strategy plan.
5. What are your most important non-financial concerns?
This question could be very revealing. As of today, in 2024, so many people are worried about finances. Right now and in the future. Will there be enough? Recognizing their non-financial priorities allows you to consider these factors in the strategy you develop for them.
6. What are your current concerns?
This is one of the best strategy questions to understanding the client’s immediate challenges help identify areas that require attention in the coaching strategy you come up with.
7. What are your short and long-term life goals?
Clarifying the clients overall life goals (short and long term provides a foundation for developing a comprehensive coaching plan.
8. What are your overall financial goals?
This is another of the best strategy questions to help uncover their broader financial aspirations and objectives. For many clients, finances after every other area of their life. Relationships. Health. State of mind. Take this into deep consideration as a coach.
9. Do you work with any other therapists, coaches or professionals?
Knowing if they have existing relationships with other professionals in a similar field allows for collaboration and coordination.
For example, you don’t need a full medical history from your client, but it would be important to know if they are seeing a doctor regularly for any health condition or perhaps a therapist for their psychological well-being.
10. What is your process for handling your money?
Knowing how a client handles their money on a day to day basis can reveal a lot about their state of mind. Money is a direct exchange for things that we need in our lives and things that we want. Knowing how your client currently deals with their money day to day can establish patterns that they could not express otherwise. Knowingly or not.
Remember, these are some of the best strategy questions you can ask in your coach and client fact finding meeting, but they are not exhaustive.
There may be many specific questions to ask depending on the client’s current and unique situation. The goal is to establish a strong coach/client relationship and gather the necessary information to develop a comprehensive and tailored strategy for them.
