As someone who has been on a ‘self-healing’ path for many decades, I find it interesting that the term self-healing is now becoming commonplace.
It’s because of this I wanted to breakdown the term self-healing and perhaps give it more context.
I’m finding that in these days – the 2020s – that many terms have lost some or most of their meanings. People are not thinking like they once did. ‘Critical thought’ was more common in earlier generations.
Far too many adults are now prioritizing a child’s comfort over discipline. It’s also true that many adults are becoming destructive rather than being a caretaker to children.
What Does Self-Healing Really Mean?
SELF = Your Whole Being – body, mind and spirit.
HEALING = Repairing a wound
So, for me, self-healing is the repair of damage/wounding within the body, mind and/or spirit of an individual human being.
For me, this is far beyond ‘self-care’ which is about maintenance.
Self-healing is playing an active role in your own healing. Much like the blood platelets work hard to flood the area of a cut to bind and heal the skin before it can become infected.
This for me, is a big distinction between everyday self-care and self-healing. Which means we must define a ‘wound’ before we can discuss the self-healing that needs to be done to tend to it.

How Do I Know It’s A Wound & Not Just Regular Life?
This is a good question that I would answer with another question (which is irritating I know)…
The Question – How do you know the difference between a paper cut and a cut that will need 17 stitches?
The Answer – Pain.
Self-healing is about identifying areas in your life where you have experienced pain. Real pain. Real trauma. Nor just daily stressors/challenges. Those are paper cut category. Real pain and trauma need real self healing… AND probably healing help from a facilitator.
Then, it’s about coming up with practices in your daily life to promote healing.
For me this includes a deep faith and relationship with our Creator – God.
I am not Christian. I did not grow up with any type of faith. Yet, through my own battles, I’ve learned that have a faith and relationship with the Divine Force that created All That Is… everything gets better.
AND — it’s the only force that truly heals anything.
Today, many therapists ad doctors emphasize that you should not undertake the self-healing process without help. I’ve read many ‘highly acclaimed’ quotes and research articles that say, “Reaching out to a trusted professional when needed can—and in many cases, should—be part of your process.”
That’s what we are told to do today.
In generations gone by, people who wanted to heal got busy.
They tended to fields and animals. Many would work to serve others. They built things. They played music. All of these activities help to align our natural life energy forces and bring them back into balance. Which is the ultimate sign of healing. You become much more solid and not as easily thrown off.
Where Does God Come Into It?
Well, our Creator is always there for us so the answer is – anytime you are willing to commune with the Most High.
Of course, self-healing works best when you are consistent and actively involved in the process.
Which means that the more often you talk to God -silently in your mind- the stronger your connection will be. Of course, it’s like any other relationship. The more time you spend sharing and interacting the more you can determine how much you can trust the other.
This includes trusting the messages that are given. You must decide to take action on the messages to continue the strengthen the relationship. It’s the only way to truly heal — is through the Creator.
So, in that sense, self-healing is building that relationship with the Higher Power and then asking for the healing.
Of course, part of this is thinking differently about how you were wounded. It’s tempting and indeed, unavoidable, to feel powerless when you are being victimized. It’s why there is pain and trauma in the first place. A power structure has been misused.

Techniques and Strategies for Self-Healing
Besides strengthening your connection with Infinite Intelligence, there are things you can do on a practical basis to heal.
Part of self-healing is all about implementing healthy and sustainable routines into your daily life that enhance and support wellness and healing. As mentioned earlier, such as getting outside, getting some exercise and eating wholesome food.
Self-healing usually involves a multi-faceted approach. Some activities can be done in the short term if you are really suffering deep pain and others can be done regularly across your life span.
Here are a few suggestions that have helped me and many others;
- Add meditation into your daily routine. This is an excellent way to calm your nervous system – which is overloaded from trauma – but helps to get you connected to The Creator as well.
- Begin or continue a creative endeavor. For example, plant some herbs, sing, play an instrument, write or keep a journal, paint, sketch, sew etc. Using our creative energy is a very useful and healing activity
- Establish a daily gratitude practice. Just going through your day, notice things that you may have take for granted. Walking down the street, going up stairs, reading, breathing easily etc. Then notice how much more appreciation you have for life once you do this.
- Incorporate physical activity into your day. It’s one of the best habits anyone can develop.
- Stick to a healthy diet. Another way to help stay balanced.
- Knowing how to get good, deep sleep. If you need some help getting to sleep I narrate meditations and sleep stories on the AURA app here…
- Learn to set good boundaries. Some of the greatest damage real pain and trauma do to a person is eliminating their core sense of themselves. Which obliterates any ability so know what is right for you or not. Start by knowing what makes you feel better and what doesn’t and start choosing to say yes or no based on how much life force energy it will take.

Resources and Support for Self-Healing
When it comes to self-healing, you don’t have to go this alone.
However, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. Below is a short list to help you on your pathway to self-healing;
- Download apps for guided meditations, gratitude, exercise, sound healing, and self regulation – as an example — I am a voice artist and long time meditator. I love narrating guided meditations and sleep stories. If you’d like to find my content you can do so on the AURA app and Insight Timer – along thousands of other talented people.
- Look for books on mindfulness, self-compassion, and trauma-informed practices that resonate with you.
- Seek out in-person and online communities focused on a personal interest of yours
- Consider attending nature-based activities and outdoor retreats
Ultimately, everyone will find the practices that work best for them.
The idea is to make self healing and growth a priority in your life when you have experienced deep pain and trauma.
Keep in mind, too, that self-healing isn’t necessarily meant to be done alone.
Incorporating a personal, private relationship with the Most High is recommended, in addition to finding community support and a good healing practitioner/facilitator. If my ideas and philosophies make sense to you, it might make sense to work with me as a client. Find more here…
Thanks for reading/listening. I wish you a very prosperous day. Renee
