This is one of the first love letters I narrated. It is written and narrated by me (Renee).
I was surprised to see there has been a recent surge of interest in handwritten letters. It is a lost art that I have begun reviving for my own family and friends.
These Love Letters are an ongoing project to both celebrate handwritten letters, as well as, allow me to showcase my writing, narration and interest in this medium.
This particular letter – as most of them are -was inspired by the many war time letters sent by the ladies missing their men during WWII.

TRANSCRIPT #4 – The Love Letters Project
These two short love letters are written by the Earl of Rochester to Mrs. Elizabeth Barry, a very popular British actress of the time.
It was written circa early 1700s.
The Earl of Rochester was one of Mrs. Barry’s lovers.
Here is the first note.
“Madam, nothing can ever be so dear to me as you are, and I am so convinced of this that I dare undertake to love you as long as I live.
Believe all I say, for that is the kindest thing imaginable, and when you can devise any way that will make me appear so to you, instruct me in it, for I need a better understanding than my own to show my love without wrong to it.“
This is the second short letter from the Earl of Rochester, written when his hand was wounded and disabled.
“Madam, this is the first service my hand has done me since my being a cripple, and I would not employ it in a lie so soon.
Therefore, pray believe me sincere when I assure you that you are very dear to me, and as long as I live, I will be kind to you.
P.S. This is all my hand would write, but my heart thinks a great deal more.”
